Explore Sainte-Marguerite Island

These gems of biodiversity invite you to take a stroll and relax. Sainte-Marguerite Island is the larger of the two islands. This little paradise stretches about 3 km long and is 900 m wide. Enjoy an idyllic setting between the national forest that covers much of the island and the hidden coves along the coast. This stunning island is home to several historic and unique sites.

Visit Fort Royal, a designated Historic Monument, and the Museum of the Man in the Iron Mask and Fort Royal, a museum of terrestrial and underwater archaeology. Fort Royal is one of the island’s historical gems. It features exhibitions on terrestrial and underwater archaeology. This museum traces the mysterious history of the Man in the Iron Mask and displays various artifacts discovered in the surrounding area.

Don’t miss the France and Mediterranean Underwater Ecomuseum either, which is free to visit—but only underwater. It features six monumental statues depicting human faces that have been submerged a few meters from the shore.

Sainte-Marguerite Island also features 22 km of marked trails that you can explore at your own pace, offering splendid views. Sainte-Marguerite is not only a site of historical heritage but also a haven of peace and unspoiled nature. Visitors can explore the various trails that wind through the island at their own pace, enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding area. The secluded coves are perfect for those seeking a moment of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle.

Saint-Honorat Island

Just a stone’s throw away, Saint-Honorat Island is smaller but just as charming. Known for its tranquility and spirituality, the island attracts many retreat-goers every year.

The fortified monastery of Lérins, built in 1073 by Abbot Aldebert, is a must-see. This historic monument, which has withstood numerous attacks, features several cloisters and seven chapels from various periods. The Abbey of Lérins is also worth a visit to explore its architecture and history.

Among the island’s attractions, the cannonball furnaces are particularly fascinating. These structures, commissioned by General Bonaparte in 1794, were used to defend the island against enemy ships. Today, they are well-preserved and have been designated historic monuments since 1908. There are now only about ten of these furnaces left in France.

Discover the fortified monastery built in 1863 and now home to 21 Cistercian monks. The island is renowned for its artisanal products. The Cistercian monks cultivate an 8-hectare vineyard there, producing more than 30,000 bottles of wine annually. These wines, made from six different grape varieties, are renowned for their quality. For wine lovers, special events called “Vineyards and Wines Days” are held on the first Friday of every month. These events include a tour of the vineyard and a tasting of the Saint-Pierre and Saint-Honorat vintages, with shuttle transportation included.

In addition to wine, the monks produce nearly 9,000 bottles of liqueurs each year, including renowned varieties such as La Lérina. They also oversee the productionof olive oil and lavenderoil, which are used to make scented sachets. All of these products are available at the Lérins Abbey gift shop, offering visitors the opportunity to take a piece of this unique island home with them.

Léro and the Lérins Islands

Léro, Cannes’ mascot, is closely linked to the Lérins Islands, particularlyÎle Saint-Honorat. According to legend, this mysterious creature made its home on the uninhabited island of Lérins long before the arrival of Saint-Honorat. A discreet adventurer, Léro explored every nook and cranny of the island, while remaining invisible so as not to frighten the rare visitors. The island’s tranquility was disrupted by the arrival of Saint-Honorat, a monk seeking to dedicate his life to God.

Their encounter was marked by an epic battle, which gave rise to the islands of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat. This legend adds to the charm and mystery of the Lérins Islands, which are now popular destinations for their natural and historical heritage. Through this story, Léro symbolizes the deep connection between Cannes and its neighboring islands, over which it has watched over for centuries.
