The History of the Old Course Cannes Golf Links
Located behind the magnificent Château de la Napoule, the Old Course is also very close to Cannes. It was this chic location that Grand Duke Michel of Russia chose to establish the first golf course on the Mediterranean coast. The year was 1891, and he was in exile at the time after marrying Pushkin’s granddaughter, whom he had met in Nice.
From this love story emerged a golf resort that would soon attract the cream of society. The future King Edward VII of England was a member of the first board of directors, and General Chamberlain and Winston Churchill played there…
The Grand Duke had chosen an unusual site, crossed by a coastal river and home to a farmhouse. Today, the building has been transformed into a superb clubhouse, and the Mandelieu-la-Napoule golf course has retained all its charm. You play among mimosa trees and umbrella pines, and take a small ferry to cross from one bank of the river to the other and continue your round! The height of chic, the golf course can even be reached from the sea via its dock.
No doubt this magical landscape has helped make this golf course legendary. In any case, it is highly renowned and hosts major events.
